Down Memory Line is a personal memoir of working life on the SL&NCR. To some degree, these are better than the dry facts of a standard company history, as the
individual will always put their own spin on things and will recall events not deemed important enough for a standard company history.
The author has done a good job with this work. The first part of the book sets out his early life and family background, leading up to his own employment on the
SL&NCR as a boy porter. He stayed with the company up until its demise in 1957, obtaining employment with CIE after this.
Details of the stations on the SL&NCR, staff who worked on the railway as well of anecdotes concerning the ever present smuggling activities that occurred on all
cross border railways add to the overall story.
